Ngal’ayel Mukau shines with stunning double for Lille in Champions League victory
Ngal’ayel Mukau delivered a remarkable performance on Wednesday night, scoring twice in Lille’s 2-1 victory over Bologna during the Champions League’s fifth matchday. The young Congolese midfielder’s brace not only secured the win but also etched his name into the history books as the fourth-youngest player to net a double for a French club in the prestigious competition.
Mukau’s first goal came just before halftime in the 44th minute. His relentless persistence in front of goal paid off when he capitalized on a rebound to break the deadlock and give Lille a crucial lead.
The 20-year-old, who transitioned from representing Belgium’s youth teams to earning his first senior caps for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), was instrumental in Lille’s victory.
A Night to Remember
Bologna equalized in the 63rd minute, but Mukau responded almost immediately. Just three minutes later, he converted a precise cross from Fernandez-Pardo, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Łukasz Skorupski with a calm finish.
The midfielder-turned-playmaker, repositioned as a number 10 by Lille coach Bruno Génésio, delivered an inspired performance that showcased his versatility and poise under pressure.
The match marked a career milestone for Mukau, who expressed his delight after scoring his first professional goals. “I am very happy with my first two goals.
I had never scored, even at my old clubs! Scoring in the Champions League has been a dream of mine since I was little,” he said.
Reflecting on his goals, Mukau added, “On my first goal, I tried with my left foot, the goalkeeper stopped it, but it went in with my right. Same thing on the second. I am very happy.”
Rising Star with a Promising Future
Born in Antwerp and developed at Mechelen, Mukau joined Lille this summer for €5 million after an impressive season in Belgium, where he played 28 matches and helped KV Mechelen to a strong finish.
Since moving to France, the young midfielder has quickly adapted, featuring prominently in Lille’s Champions League play-off fixtures and making key contributions in the group stage.
At just 20 years and 24 days old, Mukau’s double places him in elite company alongside Kylian Mbappé, Karim Benzema, and David Trezeguet as one of the youngest players to score twice in the competition for a French club.
His performance was pivotal in helping Lille secure 12 points in the group stage standings, keeping their hopes alive for a spot in the knockout rounds.
A Star in the Making for the DRC
Mukau’s rise also bodes well for the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he recently earned his first senior caps. Despite defeats to Guinea and Ethiopia earlier this month, his emergence offers optimism for the national team.
With his evolving attacking prowess, Mukau could be a cornerstone for the Leopards as they build for the future.
For Lille and the DRC, Ngal’ayel Mukau appears destined to be a player of significant impact on both the club and international stages.
