Newcastle invest in Guinea teenager Ousmane Diabate after rapid rise in Turkey

Newcastle United have signed highly rated Guinea international Ousmane Diabate, an 18-year-old midfielder who has been compared with N’Golo Kante.

The Premier League club confirmed the move on Friday as part of its plans for the future. Diabate joins from Genclerbirligi in a deal worth 2.5m euros, but will remain with the Turkish club on loan until the end of the season to continue his development.

Diabate has made a remarkable rise over the past year. He was still playing for his formative club, Academie SOAR, in Guinea as recently as mid-December before being discovered by Genclerbirligi.

After moving to Turkey, the midfielder needed only eight months to make a strong impression and attract Newcastle’s attention. His progress persuaded the Magpies to invest in a player who had also been monitored by Tottenham, Aston Villa, Brighton and Brentford.

Newcastle sporting director Ross Wilson expressed his satisfaction at securing a player viewed as possessing significant potential.

Diabate has earned comparisons with former France international Kante because of his energy, defensive work and ability to cover large areas of the pitch. He can operate as a box-to-box midfielder or in a deeper holding role.

His strengths include winning possession repeatedly, competing effectively in challenges and contributing across the midfield. He is also highly regarded for his quality when playing out from the back, a skill that can help launch counter-attacks, as well as for his football intelligence, which is considered to be above average.

The teenager has already made his senior international debut for Guinea. On 4 June, he came off the bench for the final 12 minutes of a friendly against Northern Ireland, which Guinea lost 1-0.

That appearance was his first cap for the Syli National and took his international total to one. His move to Newcastle now represents the latest step in an unusually swift progression from the Academie SOAR setup to senior international football and a transfer to an English club.

Newcastle’s agreement allows Diabate to finish the season with Genclerbirligi, where he will have the opportunity to continue gaining experience before linking up with the Magpies. The club’s decision to secure him after such a short period in Turkey reflects the impression he made during his breakthrough campaign.

The midfielder’s profile, combining physical strength, ball recovery and the ability to play in more than one central role, has led to the Kante comparison. Newcastle will hope the loan arrangement provides further time for him to mature before he begins the next phase of his career in England.
