Kobbie Mainoo returns to Manchester United training ahead of Chelsea clash
Kobbie Mainoo has returned to Manchester United training after missing four consecutive matches through injury, handing head coach Michael Carrick a potential boost ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea.
The midfielder participated in Wednesday morning’s session at Carrington after being sidelined since United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on October 10.
According to Sam C on X, “The midfielder took part in Wednesday morning’s session at Carrington after missing United’s last four matches through injury”.
Mainoo’s return offers Carrick another option in midfield as United prepare for a difficult assignment at Stamford Bridge, with the club struggling for consistency this season.
Mainoo back after four-match absence
Mainoo completed the draw against Tottenham but sustained an injury during the contest, ruling him out of United’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid three days later.
His recovery also came too late for the meeting with Leeds United, while Carrick indicated on October 20 that the academy graduate could need another 10 days before returning to action.
The 21-year-old subsequently missed the matches against Como and Bournemouth, extending his absence to four games.
His participation in Wednesday’s training session represents a step forward, although United will need to assess his response before deciding whether he is ready to feature against Chelsea.
A place on the bench could provide a cautious route back into the squad, depending on how he responds to the increased workload.
Carrick handed midfield selection boost
Mainoo’s return comes at a time when United need greater consistency in the middle of the pitch.
Carrick will remain in charge for the Chelsea fixture despite United sitting 16th in the Premier League and having recorded only two victories in 12 matches across all competitions this season.
The coach has experimented with his midfield combinations, initially pairing Youri Tielemans with Andrey Santos before Mainoo replaced Santos in the starting line-up.
Carlos Baleba has also returned to full fitness following an ankle injury, giving Carrick additional options as he looks to improve the balance and creativity of his midfield.
Mainoo’s ability to operate centrally could prove valuable, particularly as United seek to improve their control of matches and provide greater support to their attacking players.
However, his availability for Saturday will depend on his fitness and whether the coaching staff believe he can return without risking another setback.
Academy graduate with a Wembley final moment
Mainoo joined Manchester United’s academy from Cheadle & Gatley in 2014, aged nine, and progressed through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut against Charlton Athletic in the League Cup on January 10, 2023.
Before his latest injury setback, the midfielder had made 110 competitive appearances for the Red Devils, scoring eight goals.
He won the FA Youth Cup in 2022 before helping United lift the senior FA Cup two years later.
Mainoo scored United’s second goal in their 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the 2024 FA Cup final at Wembley, establishing himself as an important figure in the club’s first team.
The midfielder has never been sent out on loan and reaffirmed his long-term commitment to United in April 2026 by signing a contract running until June 2031.
His return to training therefore comes at a crucial point for both player and club, with United looking to improve their league position and Mainoo seeking to re-establish himself in the team.
Whether he starts against Chelsea or begins on the bench remains to be seen, but his participation in Wednesday’s session gives Carrick another option as he prepares for Saturday’s encounter.
