Nayef Aguerd explains why Real Sociedad transfer collapsed

Nayef Aguerd has revealed that a disagreement over his return-to-play schedule, rather than a medical problem, was behind the collapse of his proposed move to Real Sociedad.

The Morocco international addressed the situation in a statement posted on Instagram after his expected transfer to the Spanish club failed to go through during the summer window.

Aguerd said discussions with Real Sociedad’s coach centred on how he would gradually return to competitive action after recovering from injury.

“After an exchange with the coach, I had the opportunity to discuss a gradual return program. The matter was then suspended during negotiations between the two clubs,” he indicated.

The defender also made clear that his medical examination had not been responsible for the breakdown in negotiations. According to Aguerd, the tests were completed successfully and received approval from both Real Sociedad and his current club.

The main disagreement instead involved his proposed programme for returning to full competition. Aguerd believes a gradual approach was necessary to ensure he regained his fitness properly and could cope with the demands of a full season.

Real Sociedad’s coach, however, wanted the Moroccan defender to be ready to contribute immediately. The difference in approach ultimately prevented the two sides from reaching an agreement over the transfer.

Aguerd has insisted that his decision should not be interpreted as an impulsive reaction or as a sign of disrespect towards Real Sociedad. The defender believes his position was based on a desire to manage his physical condition responsibly.

The failed move has therefore left Aguerd’s future unresolved, while his explanation provides his account of what brought the proposed return to Real Sociedad to an end.

The Moroccan’s comments also clarify that there was no medical obstacle preventing the transfer. Instead, the disagreement was focused on how quickly he should return to competitive football.

Aguerd now remains at the centre of transfer speculation as the summer window continues, with the breakdown of the Real Sociedad move leaving his next step uncertain.
