Alvaro Arbeloa backs Nigeria defender Calvin Bassey for leadership role at Fulham
Fulham head coach Alvaro Arbeloa believes Calvin Bassey is ideally suited to his tactical approach and has backed the Nigerian defender to emerge as a leader in the dressing room.
Arbeloa made the comments after Bassey produced a commanding display in Fulham’s 1-0 pre-season victory over Stuttgart at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
The Super Eagles defender was at the heart of a disciplined defensive performance as Fulham ended their preparations for the new Premier League season with a clean sheet.
Bassey’s ability to defend large spaces was particularly impressive, with the defender showing the pace, strength and composure required to operate in a high defensive line.
“Calvin is a proper and top player for my style of game because we need to defend so high and leave a lot of space behind. He has everything,” Arbeloa told Fulham media.
Nigerian tipped to become a Fulham leader
Beyond his performances on the pitch, Arbeloa was equally impressed by Bassey’s character and approach to training.
The Fulham boss described the 26-year-old as someone who brings personality to the squad but switches into a highly committed mode when work begins.
“He is a funny guy but when we have to work he is always the first one. I love Calvin and he can be our leader,” he concluded.
The endorsement could signal an increased role for Bassey within Arbeloa’s Fulham side, particularly as the coach looks to establish his philosophy ahead of the new campaign.
Bassey finding his feet at Fulham
Bassey joined Fulham in 2023 after an inconsistent spell with Dutch giants Ajax, but has gradually established himself as an important figure at Craven Cottage.
The former Leicester City defender has made 101 appearances for the club across all competitions, contributing four goals and one assist during that period.
His latest performance against Stuttgart will strengthen his case for a prominent role under Arbeloa, who will now expect the Nigerian to carry his pre-season form into the competitive campaign.
With Fulham preparing for another demanding Premier League season, Bassey’s defensive qualities and growing influence could make him one of the key players in Arbeloa’s plans.:::_
