Musona says ‘flying’ Kaizer Chiefs spell produced the best goal of his career

Knowledge Musona believes the greatest goal of his career was scored in a Kaizer Chiefs shirt and says his time with the Soweto giants remains central to his football story, more than a decade after he last played for the club.

The 36-year-old forward, now back in Zimbabwe with champions Scottland, recently faced his former side in the Toyota Cup, a meeting that stirred memories of his prolific two spells at Chiefs.

Musona struck 44 goals for Amakhosi, but he is adamant that one particular strike – a spectacular effort against Mpumalanga Black Aces that left goalkeeper Denis Onyango helpless – stands above everything else he has achieved.

“Do you know that I scored the best goal of my career while playing for Chiefs, I mean of all the goals that I have scored in my career my best came while I was at Chiefs,” Musona tells KickOff.com.

‘Best I ever scored’

While many supporters instantly recall his famous Soweto derby goal against Orlando Pirates, Musona insists another Premier Soccer League moment is the pinnacle of his finishing.

“Everyone is always talking about the goal I scored against Orlando Pirates but the one against Mpumalanga Black Aces is the best I ever scored.

“I would say in my career, not only here at Chiefs.

“I will put that goal tops of all the goals that I have ever scored at all the clubs that I have been with,” he explains.

Describing the strike in detail, Musona recalls an early flash of inspiration at the start of the match, following a pass from defender Thomas Sweswe.

“It was at the start of the match (two minutes) when the ball came my way (from Thomas Sweswe) and I had a good bicycle kick connection with the ball.

“I did that on the turn and hanging in the air.”

That season, the 2010-11 campaign, proved to be the most productive of his career, as he finished as the league’s top scorer and became one of the most feared forwards in South African football.

“That time I was high on confidence and it was the season I ended at the league’s top scorer (2010/11).

“It was my best season, and I was flying and when you are flying you can do anything and the ball can end up in the net,” says the veteran forward.

Derby memories that endure

Musona’s form at Chiefs eventually took him to Germany, Belgium and Saudi Arabia, but the Zimbabwe international says the profile of the Soweto derby and his impact in that fixture have helped secure his legacy with the club’s supporters.

“The derby is regarded as one of the best derbies not only in Africa but the whole world.

“If you perform to your best in games like that and give fans and the club a positive contribution you will always be remembered.

“The goal I finished with a header over Moeneeb Josephs is a good memory that I will never forget,” says Musona.

Having now returned to Zimbabwe with Scottland, Musona’s recent reunion with Chiefs in the Toyota Cup has underlined how his time in Soweto continues to shape the way he reflects on a career that has spanned several countries and leagues, but which, in his own words, peaked during that “flying” season at Naturena.
