Muchichwa says inconsistency is keeping Chiefs behind Sundowns and Pirates

Robson Muchichwa believes Kaizer Chiefs’ inability to produce consistent performances is the main reason they remain behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.

Muchichwa, a popular figure at Amakhosi during the 1990s, says the club’s difficulties are not necessarily caused by a shortage of quality. Instead, he points to inconsistent performances and frequent changes in team selection.

Kaizer Chiefs appear to have a stronger squad for the 2026/27 season than in previous campaigns, but their first-round exit from the MTN8 has increased frustration among supporters. Muchichwa, who is known by the nickname ‘Mashamplan’, says the contrast with their two main rivals is clear.

“The biggest problem at Chiefs is consistency, same as last season. The team lack consistency,” Muchichwa told KickOff.

He also believes players need time to become established within a team and should not be expected to adapt immediately.

“For a player to really settle in a team, they need about four to five games. They shouldn’t be rushed to settle. The Chiefs team can’t win games consistently like Sundowns and Pirates do. That’s the difference between Chiefs and the other two teams; they are consistent, those two. They can easily win you from four to five games in a row. But unfortunately, we can’t say the same thing about Chiefs,” he added.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have set the standard in South African football by regularly putting together winning runs, whereas Kaizer Chiefs have struggled to maintain that level of form.

Muchichwa said the club would not close the gap until it develops greater consistency, offering a direct assessment of what is missing from the team.

“That’s the only reason Chiefs are struggling to reach Sundowns and Pirates’ level on the pitch. In football, if you are not consistent, then you don’t have a team,” Muchichwa said.

Kaizer Chiefs go into their next fixture after drawing 1-1 with Polokwane City in their most recent league match last weekend.

Their next opponents are Golden Arrows, with the game scheduled to take place at the Princess Magogo Stadium on Sunday.
