Mosimane praises Mofokeng and Appollis after South Africa thrash Eritrea

Pitso Mosimane praised Relebohile Mofokeng’s quality and Oswin Appollis’ all-round contribution after Bafana Bafana opened their second Afcon qualifier with a 5-0 win over Eritrea at Cairo’s Al Salam Stadium on Wednesday night.

Appollis provided three assists in an impressive display, helping set up Mofokeng’s opener, Iqraam Rayners’ fourth goal and Luther Singh’s late strike.

The Orlando Pirates attacker had been under scrutiny after South Africa’s 2-1 victory over Guinea, when Mosimane said he needed to contribute more defensively rather than simply play in the style he had developed at club level.

Appollis responded with one of his strongest performances for Bafana Bafana, showing composure and building an effective understanding with his attacking team-mates.

“I am happy with the three assists from Appollis. He can play anywhere – on the wings, drift inside, and all of that,” Mosimane said.

“He’s a good boy and a good player. I am happy with Appollis; he gave us assists. He gave Luther Singh an opportunity to make a strong return, as he’s been out for a long time.”

Singh, who returned to the Bafana Bafana squad after a five-year absence, made a brief appearance from the bench but quickly linked up with the rest of the forward line.

The attacker also delivered two dangerous balls during his cameo, something Mosimane viewed as evidence of the team’s collective approach.

“Even Luther delivered two good balls, which shows that the players are united and there’s no selfishness,” said Mosimane. “It’s all about teamwork.”

Mofokeng was the standout performer of the evening. The young attacker brought the experience he has gained with Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to the international stage, scoring twice with confidence and composure.

He opened the scoring early in the first half by meeting Appollis’ pass and finishing from close range.

Mofokeng then doubled his tally after creating space for himself, moving past Eritrea’s defenders before calmly placing the ball beyond goalkeeper Jonathan Sultan.

“Rele showed his class. What a class. Rele is a top player!” Mosimane said.

Sphephelo Sithole and Rayners also scored, while Singh completed the emphatic result with the final goal.

South Africa will next face Egypt in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, with Mosimane hoping his side can maintain its attacking momentum.
