Morocco VAR expansion

Royal Moroccan Football Federation is accelerating efforts to modernise officiating in the country through a major reform programme focused on technology, training, and improved decision-making across all levels of competition.

The initiative was outlined during a presentation held at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, where officials from the National Refereeing Department (DTNA) met with local and international media to showcase ongoing developments, particularly the growing use of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology.

According to the DTNA, VAR is playing an increasingly important role in improving the accuracy of match decisions while ensuring greater fairness on the pitch. Officials provided detailed explanations of how the system operates and the specific situations in which it intervenes during matches.

National Technical Director of Refereeing Redouane Jiyed explained that referees in Morocco are now evaluated after every match, with their performances closely monitored through continuous assessments, training sessions, and certification programmes designed to raise overall standards.

He also revealed that a specialised administrative and technical structure has been created to manage referee appointments, communications, financial processes, and statistical data, reflecting a more professional and data-driven approach to officiating.

Among the most significant innovations introduced is an electronic training simulator that allows referees to practise match scenarios remotely, helping them improve reaction time and decision-making under pressure. Jiyed stressed that modern digital systems are now central to improving efficiency and organisation within Moroccan refereeing.

Looking ahead, Morocco is also preparing to introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT), already used in several top international competitions. The system is expected to further enhance accuracy in offside decisions once implemented domestically.

The DTNA also plans to establish a centralised VAR control room capable of overseeing multiple matches at the same time, improving consistency in video-assisted decisions across the league.

During the session, VAR instructor and technical consultant Harry Lennard demonstrated the SAOT system and discussed its advantages compared to other existing technologies used globally.

Additionally, RefPal developer Sten Klaasen presented a digital platform designed to track referee performance statistics throughout their careers, while Fredy Fauterel explained in detail the VAR protocol used to manage key match incidents.

The modernisation drive reflects Morocco’s wider ambition to strengthen its football infrastructure and align its officiating standards with international best practices ahead of major continental and global competitions.
