Moroccan midfielder Hachim Mastour returns to European football with Virtus Verona
Hachim Mastour has officially returned to European professional football, signing a one-year contract with Italian Serie C outfit Virtus Verona.
The deal, confirmed on Friday 27 June, extends until June 2026, with an option for an additional season.
Once considered one of Morocco’s brightest football talents, Mastour, now 27, expressed his gratitude and determination upon his signing.
“I’m happy to start this new chapter with Virtus Verona. I’m really eager to give my all and give everything for this jersey. I thank the club for their trust,” he said.
Mastour’s journey back to the European stage traces a winding path, beginning with his early promise at AC Milan.
He was tipped for stardom as a teenager, turning heads with his technical ability and flair. However, despite the hype surrounding his initial development, a breakthrough in Europe failed to materialise.
In 2022, he returned to Morocco, signing with Renaissance Zemamra, and later joined Union Touarga in 2023.
Yet the Moroccan top flight lacked the spotlight and structure needed to reignite his career. The anxious promise of earlier years began to fade.
By early 2025, Mastour had taken an unconventional detour away from professional ranks. He joined FC Zeta Milano in the Kings League—an innovative, seven-a-side competition conceived by Gerard Piqué that blends entertainment with competitive play. His participation drew attention, but it represented a further step away from traditional footballing paths.
Virtus Verona, somewhat outside the spotlight of Europe’s top leagues, may offer Mastour the stability and structured competition he needs to rebuild his career.
Signed to a club rooted in Italy’s third division, he now has the opportunity to prove himself under familiar, yet demanding, professional conditions.
Serie C is far from the glamour of Serie A, but it is a fiercely competitive environment where seasoned professionals and promising young talents stake their careers.
Performance, not reputation, determines progression. For Mastour, every game represents a chance to remind the world of the potential that once made him a sensation.
The move to Virtus Verona also keeps alive his hopes of returning to the Morocco national setup. His early career saw him represent the Atlas Lions at youth levels and earn senior call-ups.
While his national team prospects have dimmed amid his career off-track, consistent performances in Europe could reopen those doors.
The contract’s one-year term—with an option to extend—signals mutual caution and ambition. Mastour gains a platform to demonstrate his worth in a stable environment; Virtus Verona acquire a player with technical quality and untapped potential, aware they are taking a calculated risk.
As summer transitions to the new campaign, eyes will be on Mastour’s adaptation both on and off the pitch.
His fitness, match sharpness, and ability to thrive within a team-orientated setup will all be under scrutiny. In Serie C’s physically demanding and tactically disciplined matches, every player must pull their weight.
Mastour’s path has been anything but linear. From prodigy, to journeyman, to Kings League entertainer, he has consistently defied expectations.
Now, with professional football back on European soil, he has the chance—even the obligation—to revive his career through consistent, impactful performances.
At Virtus Verona, Mastour has an opportunity to write a new chapter—a focused, purposeful one, removed from youthful hype and distant distractions.
Whether he reclaims his place among Morocco’s football elite, or grounds his career in the solidity of Serie C success, remains to be seen.
But as he dons the Virtus Verona jersey for the upcoming pre-season, Mastour has proven he hasn’t abandoned his ambitions.
In a modest setting, far from earlier expectations, he seeks redemption and a reaffirmation of his talent.
