Morgan Rogers says Chelsea’s defeat by Liverpool on penalties was “perhaps the worst way to lose a match” after the two sides drew 1-1 in normal time in the English League Cup.
Liverpool won the shootout 6-5 to reach the quarter-finals, in a match Rogers described as closely contested.
“It was an even game, and at times we were the better team,” the Chelsea player told ITV Sport.
Rogers said he had opportunities to change the outcome but was unable to take them.
“I had a few chances that I would have liked to take and score from,” he added.
Cody Gakpo put Liverpool ahead, before Rogers levelled for Chelsea. Neither side could find a winning goal during normal time, sending the tie to a penalty shootout.
“It was one of those games that could have gone either way, and we have to accept the result,” Rogers said.
The result means Liverpool have eliminated Chelsea six times in the history of their English League Cup campaigns, more than any other team.
Liverpool will face Bournemouth in the quarter-finals.
