Mohamed Salah opens up on Liverpool farewell and next career move
Mohamed Salah has spoken openly about his future after bringing an end to his long spell at Liverpool, describing an emotional farewell and confirming that he will take time before deciding his next move.
The Egyptian forward was honoured by teammates, staff and supporters on Sunday as Liverpool FC gathered to say goodbye following his departure from the club after several successful seasons.
Speaking after his final appearance, the 31-year-old reflected on his time in England and the achievements he shared with the club.
“Thank God, I finished my time at Liverpool this way. I achieved everything, I leave leaving people proud of what I did. I feel I have, to a large extent, put the team back where it belongs among the greats, and that’s the most important thing for me. I expected certain things, but not to achieve everything with the team and individually.
I won almost every title. Today (yesterday) was very difficult psychologically, as it was my last game in a place where I lived for nine years, where I spent the best years of my youth. But thank God, when I look back on it all, I feel I fully lived my youth, that I did and achieved everything in football, and that I lived my life at the club. So I couldn’t have hoped for anything more,” said Salah.
With his Liverpool contract coming to an end, Salah is set to become a free agent on 1 July, leaving his next destination open.
He addressed speculation about his future and indicated that no immediate decision has been made.
“I’ll see. I have time now. I’m going to play in the World Cup and then everything will become clear. If there’s a good opportunity before then, I’ll decide, and if not, I’ll make my decision after the World Cup.”
The forward also used the opportunity to reflect on his wider ambitions beyond his own career, expressing hope that more Egyptian players will follow in his footsteps in European football.
“Thank God, we have many talented people, but we need an opportunity, and not just an opportunity, but also hard work and effort. It is essential that they understand that they will sometimes have to make sacrifices, such as sacrificing their youth, to succeed.”
Salah leaves Liverpool after nine years marked by major trophies, individual accolades and a central role in the club’s return to consistent success at the highest level of English and European football.
