Mbokazi injury raises doubts over European transfer before deadline

Chicago Fire defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s hopes of securing a move to a major European league could be affected by an injury that is expected to keep him out for at least two months.

Interest in the 20-year-old has been confirmed by his agent, Basia Michaels, but the timing of the problem is a concern with the main European transfer windows due to close at the beginning of September.

Mbokazi has attracted attention with his performances for Chicago Fire in Major League Soccer (MLS), while his profile was further enhanced by his involvement in Bafana Bafana’s historic 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign.

The former Orlando Pirates defender had been expected by some to follow Olwethu Makhanya into European football. Makhanya recently completed a move from MLS club Philadelphia Union to Scottish giants Rangers, increasing speculation that Mbokazi could also make the switch to a higher-profile team.

Michaels, who represents Mbokazi through Quality Time Sports, has repeatedly spoken about European interest in her client. Despite the setback, she said the injury should not necessarily prevent a transfer.

“We’ve gone to the MLS and have done exceptionally well and our next step is definitely Europe. We have to go to the inception of this thing (where there was criticism), there are a million ways to achieve one outcome,” Michaels said on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified.

She acknowledged that Mbokazi’s injury had come at an unfortunate moment, while suggesting discussions over his future remained active.

“A lot has happened. I can’t tell you right now because we’re currently doing a lot. The timing of his injury is (also) not the greatest. But I also don’t see his injury as a stumbling block, I must be honest with you.

“It is bad, very close to surgery. The time that he spends out is also not great, because one he has already missed the All Stars game you know but it’s not like it won’t come again. Actually, it might not come again, he might not be there (next season), a year is a very long time,” Michaels added.

Mbokazi is expected to be sidelined for at least two months. Michaels described the injury as serious and said it was close to requiring surgery, although she maintained that it should not automatically end the possibility of a European move.

The defender had already missed the MLS All-Star game because of the problem. Michaels said such an opportunity might not necessarily return, particularly if Mbokazi is no longer in MLS next season.

The major European transfer windows are scheduled to close at the beginning of September, leaving limited time for any potential deal to be completed while Mbokazi remains unavailable.
