Mbekezeli Mbokazi overtakes Lyle Foster as South Africa’s most valuable player

Mbekezeli Mbokazi has become South Africa’s highest-valued footballer after Lyle Foster’s market valuation fell following his loan move to Major League Soccer side Houston Dynamo.

Foster had occupied the top spot since joining Burnley in January 2023, but his valuation has dropped from €8 million (R149m) to €7 million (R130m), according to the latest update on theTransfermarkt website.

The 26-year-old Bafana Bafana striker was part of the South African squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His valuation had remained at €8 million despite Burnley’s relegation from the English Premier League to the Championship.

However, Foster’s move to Houston has resulted in a €1 million decrease, allowing Chicago Fire centre-back Mbekezeli Mbokazi to move into first place.

Mbokazi rises after World Cup

Mbokazi’s valuation increased before and after the World Cup, bringing him level with his Bafana Bafana team-mate Foster at €8 million (R149m).

With Foster’s valuation now reduced, the left-footed defender is the most valuable South African player, whether based in the country or playing abroad.

Hannover 96 defender Ime Okon remains in third place. His valuation stands at €3,5 million (R65m), following his move to Germany and his involvement in the World Cup campaign.

Relebohile Mofokeng, who plays for Union Saint-Gilloise, is fourth on the list with a valuation of €3 million (R59m).

The fifth position is shared by Mamelodi Sundowns players Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners. Both are valued at €2,8 million (R52m).

Foster remains the most valuable player at Houston Dynamo. The club have an option to sign the Bafana Bafana forward permanently when his loan ends at the conclusion of the 2026/27 season.

The latest changes mean the top of South Africa’s player-value rankings has been reshaped by two developments: Foster’s move to MLS and Mbokazi’s rise following his World Cup involvement.
