Former Real Madrid left-back Marcelo has ruled out a return to football for Sunday’s El Clasico against Barcelona, joking that he would not be able to cope with Lamine Yamal.
Real Madrid travel to Camp Nou to face their Catalan rivals in the 10th round of La Liga on 25 October 2026.
Speaking to DAZN before the meeting between two of Spanish football’s biggest clubs, Marcelo was asked whether he would like to return to the pitch for the fixture.
The former Brazil international responded with a laugh: “Impossible… imagine me running after Lamine Yamal now! I can’t.”
Marcelo’s light-hearted answer underlined the physical challenge facing Real Madrid’s defenders as they attempt to contain Barcelona’s young forward during the match.
Rather than trying to chase Yamal for 90 minutes, Marcelo made clear that he would prefer to watch the contest from outside the pitch.
The Brazilian is regarded as one of the most prominent players to have represented Real Madrid during his generation. He won numerous trophies with the club and made a lasting impact in the left-back position.
His spell at Real Madrid established him as one of the team’s key figures, particularly during a period in which the club collected major honours both domestically and in Europe.
Marcelo’s comments came as attention focused on the latest meeting between Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the visitors preparing to face a Barcelona side led by the pace and attacking threat of Yamal.
The former defender’s response offered a humorous view of the demands placed on those tasked with stopping the teenager, while also confirming that he has no intention of making a comeback for this particular fixture.
