Manchester United reject Everton bid for Joshua Zirkzee over attacking concerns

Manchester United have rejected an approach from Everton for Joshua Zirkzee, with concerns about a lack of attacking options influencing the decision to keep the Netherlands forward at Old Trafford.

The offer was made on the final day of the summer transfer window, but Manchester United ultimately decided that Zirkzee should remain with the club at least until the first half of the season has concluded.

Zirkzee, 25, had been linked with a move away from Manchester United throughout the summer. A return to Italy had appeared to be the most likely route for the striker, who had previously played there, although he was not enthusiastic about the prospect of moving back.

Fiorentina had held advanced negotiations over a potential deal for Zirkzee. Juventus were also reported to be interested after identifying the Dutchman as one of their options to replace Jonathan David.

However, the late approach from Everton offered Zirkzee the chance to stay in the Premier League. According to The Athletic, Everton submitted a proposal for the forward, who was keen on the possibility of joining David Moyes’ side.

Manchester United rejected that offer, with Ben Jacobs reporting that the club’s decision was driven by fears that the squad could be left short of attacking alternatives. The move means Zirkzee will remain at Old Trafford for now, despite uncertainty over how much first-team football he is likely to receive.

The decision could frustrate the player, particularly because he does not appear to be in line for regular opportunities under Michael Carrick. Manchester United have yet to use Zirkzee in a competitive match this season, with the forward left on the bench for their opening three fixtures.

Unless injuries create an opening, Zirkzee is expected to see only limited minutes as a substitute. His prospects could improve if Manchester United lose other attacking players to fitness problems, but at present he appears to be behind other options in the club’s forward line.

That leaves the Dutchman in an uncertain position. Manchester United’s concern over squad depth has prevented his departure for Everton, while his own lack of involvement means the player may still be seeking a route out of the club.

If there is no sudden change in the club’s attacking hierarchy, Zirkzee is highly likely to be among the first Manchester United players considered for a move when the transfer window reopens in January.
