Manchester United make renewed move for Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni amid midfield rebuild

Manchester United have revived their interest in Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni as they intensify the search for a specialist defensive midfielder following the departure of Casemiro to Inter Miami.

The Premier League club have approached Real Madrid again this summer to inquire about the French international’s situation, according to British newspaper The Sun.

United previously explored a deal for Tchouameni in the January window and at the start of the current transfer period, but indications at the time were that the 24-year-old would remain in Madrid and was close to agreeing a contract extension.

United’s search for Casemiro replacement

Casemiro’s exit to Major League Soccer has left a clear vacancy at the base of United’s midfield, and the club’s recruitment team are understood to be prioritising a natural holding midfielder rather than a more attack-minded option.

Tchouameni is among a shortlist of players being actively considered as Manchester United look for a long-term anchor who can provide defensive cover and balance in front of the back four.

Club figures are said to view the Frenchman as fitting the profile they have drawn up: a relatively young midfielder, comfortable operating primarily in a defensive role and capable of giving structure to the team both in and out of possession.

Profile contrasts with other new arrivals

Unlike some of the new signings linked with or already arriving at Old Trafford, Tchouameni is seen as a specialist in the defensive midfield role rather than a box-to-box or attacking player.

New arrivals Andre Santos and Youri Tielemans, for instance, are regarded as midfielders who naturally look to drive forward and contribute in the final third, rather than sit deep and shield the defence.

By contrast, Tchouameni is widely considered a holding midfielder “by nature” – a player whose instincts are to break up play, read danger and offer a platform for more creative team-mates to operate higher up the pitch.

Real Madrid’s stance presents major obstacle

Any move for Tchouameni is expected to be complicated by Real Madrid’s plans for the player.

The report suggests that the Spanish giants see the former Monaco man as an important component of their future midfield and are counting on him for the 2026-27 season, which would make Manchester United’s task of striking a deal particularly difficult.
