Mamelodi Sundowns set to sign Bafana Bafana defender Thabang Matuludi on three-year deal

Mamelodi Sundowns have agreed a three-year deal to sign Bafana Bafana right-back Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, according to Soccer Laduma.

The transfer is expected to be announced by Sundowns this week after an agreement was reached between the two clubs. The move is subject only to the 27-year-old completing his medical.

“It’s just a medical (outstanding), and then Sundowns will announce him,” said a source.

Matuludi had attracted interest from both Sundowns and Orlando Pirates, but the Tshwane club has won the race to secure his signature.

The defender made 72 appearances for Polokwane City in the top flight, earning recognition from South Africa’s senior national team, Bafana Bafana.

Born in Ngwaritsi in Limpopo, Matuludi was included in the Bafana Bafana squad for the FIFA World Cup, which took place in North America this year.

His arrival would strengthen Sundowns’ options at right-back following the long-term Achilles tendon injury suffered by Khuliso Mudau. Mudau has established himself as the club’s first-choice player in that position over the past few seasons.

Sundowns have also signed right-back Deano van Rooyen on a free transfer.

Both Van Rooyen and Matuludi are eligible to feature in the MTN8 Final against Orlando Pirates on 10 October. Neither player is cup-tied because they have not appeared in the top-eight competition this season.

Sundowns declined to comment on Matuludi’s expected arrival at Chloorkop.
