Mamelodi Sundowns edge Golden Arrows to set up MTN8 final against Orlando Pirates

Mamelodi Sundowns fought back from a first-leg deficit to beat Golden Arrows 3-2 at King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium and reach the MTN8 final on away goals after the semi-final finished 3-3 on aggregate.

Antonio Van Wyk came off the bench to score the decisive goal in a dramatic second leg on Sunday, completing a turnaround that had looked unlikely when Arrows restored their advantage in the second half.

Sundowns had started the match trailing 1-0 from the opening leg, but Cassius Mailula brought the tie level on aggregate when he scored in the 31st minute.

The visitors continued to apply pressure after the interval and appeared to have gone ahead when Ndamane Khulumani forced the ball into the net following a deflected cross from Fawaaz Basadien. However, the goal was disallowed for handball.

Arrows remained a threat on the counter-attack despite spending long periods defending. Ronaldo van Neel created one of their best opportunities with an excellent cutback, but the chance was not converted.

Goalkeeper Thakasani Mbanjwa also produced another important save to keep Arrows in front in the tie, before the home side eventually regained the lead on the night.

Van Neel was again involved in the build-up, doing outstanding work on the left before Junior Dion finished emphatically in the 69th minute. His strike flew into the roof of the net and sent the home supporters into celebration.

At that stage, Arrows needed to protect their advantage for roughly 20 minutes to reach their first MTN8 final since 2009. They responded by placing more players behind the ball as Sundowns increased the pressure.

The decisive influence came from substitute Van Wyk. In the 77th minute, he delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area that the Arrows defence failed to clear.

Marcelo Allende reacted quickest to the loose ball, scoring to put Sundowns 2-1 ahead on the night and make the aggregate score 3-3.

Arrows were suddenly under sustained pressure, while Sundowns moved closer to securing a final meeting with Orlando Pirates. Van Wyk then delivered the crucial blow himself.

The substitute moved from provider to scorer eight minutes from time, sending a long-range effort dipping beneath the diving Mbanjwa and into the net to give Sundowns a 3-1 lead.

Phiulani Khumalo pulled a goal back for Arrows in the 90th minute, giving the home crowd a final opportunity to hope for another late twist. Sundowns, however, held on to complete a dramatic recovery.

The result ended Arrows’ hopes of reaching the competition’s showpiece for the first time in 17 years, despite their narrow first-leg advantage.

Sundowns’ persistence ultimately secured their place in the final, where they will face Orlando Pirates.
