Mali misses out on 2026 World Cup as decades-long wait continues
Mali’s hopes of reaching the 2026 FIFA World Cup have once again ended in heartbreak, marking the nation’s eleventh consecutive failure to qualify for football’s biggest tournament.
The Eagles, one of Africa’s most admired teams for their flair and spirit, will not be part of the global showpiece taking place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Since making their debut attempt to reach the World Cup in 1986, Mali have yet to secure a single qualification, a drought that continues to frustrate both players and supporters.
Despite producing some of the continent’s most gifted footballers, the Eagles have been unable to convert potential into success on the global stage.
The story of Mali’s qualifying campaigns tells a tale of promise repeatedly unfulfilled.
The journey began in 1986, when the team showed glimpses of promise but ultimately fell short. In 1990, they tried again but met a similar fate.
The 1994 qualifiers brought fresh optimism with a youthful squad, yet the result was the same — another miss.
The 1998 campaign in the lead-up to the France tournament ended in disappointment, and by 2002, during the Japan and South Korea edition, Mali’s absence was becoming a familiar theme.
The dream remained out of reach in 2006, when the Eagles’ qualification hopes faded once again, and even the continent’s first World Cup on African soil in 2010 offered no relief as Mali failed to progress.
In 2014, hopes were reignited, but frustration followed.
2018 saw another promising generation come close, only to fall short yet again.
By 2022, Mali appeared better prepared than ever, boasting a competitive squad and rising international profile, but qualification for Qatar still slipped through their fingers.
The 2026 qualifiers have now confirmed what has become a painful pattern — Mali’s name will not appear among the nations competing for football’s most coveted prize.
This recurring disappointment continues to weigh heavily on Malian football.

Each new campaign begins with optimism and the belief that the breakthrough will finally come, only for dreams to fade when the final whistle blows.
For supporters, the heartbreak has become cyclical — a blend of pride in their team’s talent and sorrow over its unfulfilled potential.
Yet, despite the repeated setbacks, the story of Malian football remains one of resilience and hope.
The nation continues to nurture exceptional young players and invest in development at the grassroots level.
Many still believe that it is only a matter of time before Mali writes a new chapter in its footballing history — one that finally sees the Eagles soar onto the World Cup stage.
For now, though, the dream endures — deferred but not forgotten.
