Maghnes Akliouche’s rising stardom and France’s efforts to secure his future

Maghnes Akliouche’s impressive performance in AS Monaco’s 2-1 Champions League victory over FC Barcelona has further elevated his status in French football. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder scored his first goal in the competition, sparking renewed interest from the French national team, which appears keen to ensure he remains committed to the squad ahead of future international competitions.

Following his standout display, Akliouche’s chances of joining Didier Deschamps’ France squad for upcoming campaigns have significantly increased.

His recent form, highlighted by a composed finish against Barcelona, is a testament to his rapid development and has raised questions about where his international allegiance will ultimately lie.

This situation bears similarities to that of his fellow Paris Olympic teammate Michael Olise, who made headlines earlier in the season.

Olise scored twice in Bayern Munich’s dominant 9-2 win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League, adding to his growing reputation.

Both players were part of France’s Olympic silver-medal-winning squad in Paris, and like Olise, Akliouche has transitioned seamlessly back to domestic and European action.

His coach at Monaco, Adi Hütter, quickly integrated him into the team following the Olympic Games, starting him in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League.

At just 22, Akliouche’s stock is rising, and his relationship with the French Football Federation (FFF) appears strong.

His post-match interaction with former Olympic team coach Thierry Henry underlined the close ties he has maintained with the federation.

Henry’s warm exchange with Akliouche after the Barcelona match highlighted the interest French football officials have in keeping the talented midfielder within their fold.

Deschamps, already benefiting from the youthful talents of players like Bradley Barcola, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Olise, is unlikely to let Akliouche slip through France’s grasp.

With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, the France manager will likely include Akliouche in his plans as the team builds for future success.

By then, Akliouche will be 24, at the peak of his abilities, and a key asset for the national side.

Rumors have surfaced suggesting that Algeria, through its football federation president Walid Sadi, has been trying to lure Akliouche to represent the Algerian national team.

However, sources close to the player indicate that neither Akliouche nor his family has made any commitment to the Algerian side.

Despite speculation, there seems to be no concrete movement towards Akliouche joining the Greens.

Given his success at the Olympics, his burgeoning relationship with French football figures, and Deschamps’ clear interest in securing his future, the likelihood of Akliouche switching allegiances appears increasingly remote.

The young midfielder seems set to follow in the footsteps of other French footballing talents, continuing his journey with Les Bleus as his career reaches new heights.
