Late Leeds winner caps dramatic Premier League Saturday as Everton and Ipswich Town triumph
Everton, Ipswich Town and Leeds United all claimed important Premier League victories on Saturday, with two matches settled by goals in the closing stages and Crystal Palace and Sunderland suffering defeats.
Everton secured the clearest result of the day, beating Crystal Palace 2-0 at Hill Dickinson Stadium. The home side established control before half-time, taking a 1-0 lead into the interval.
Everton then extended their advantage early in the second half, adding a second goal to strengthen their position. Crystal Palace were unable to respond as Everton protected their lead through to the final whistle and completed a deserved 2-0 victory.
The result was one of three notable outcomes in a busy group of Premier League fixtures. While Everton were able to manage their advantage after moving in front, the other two matches remained undecided until late in the game.
Ipswich Town settle Sunderland contest late
Ipswich Town beat Sunderland 2-1 after scoring the decisive goal in the 90th minute.
Ipswich Town opened the scoring in the 24th minute and appeared to have made the stronger start to the match. Sunderland responded before the interval, however, drawing level in the 39th minute with a free-kick.
The equaliser left the contest finely balanced, and neither side was able to restore its lead for the remainder of normal play. The match seemed set to finish level until Ipswich Town found a second goal in the final minute.
That late strike secured a 2-1 victory for Ipswich Town and condemned Sunderland to defeat despite having recovered from going behind in the first half.
Leeds United leave it until the 88th minute
Leeds United also produced a late winner, overcoming Nottingham Forest 1-0 after a goalless contest for most of the match.
The two teams struggled to break the deadlock throughout the majority of the game, with neither able to find the net as the minutes passed. The result remained in doubt until the closing stages, when Leeds United finally made the breakthrough.
Leeds United scored in the 88th minute from a direct free-kick, moving ahead just before the end of normal time. Nottingham Forest could not find an equaliser, allowing Leeds United to hold on for a narrow victory.
The 1-0 result gave Leeds United all three points, while Nottingham Forest were left to reflect on a match in which they had kept the score level until the final moments.
Across the three fixtures, Everton’s two-goal success was the only match decided by more than one goal. Ipswich Town and Leeds United both required late goals to complete victories, with Ipswich Town scoring in the 90th minute and Leeds United finding the decisive effort two minutes earlier.
