Langelihle Phili earns Man of the Match award as Kaizer Chiefs target Mamelodi Sundowns test
Kaizer Chiefs winger Langelihle Phili thanked chairman and club founder Kaizer Motaung after making an immediate impact in his first official start for the South African giants.
The 21-year-old was named Man of the Match after helping Kaizer Chiefs beat Sekhukhune United 2-0 at FNB Stadium on Wednesday, a result which maintained their perfect start to the campaign.
Phili was officially unveiled by Amakhosi almost two weeks ago, following a lengthy pursuit of the former Stellenbosch FC player. The multi-million rand transfer is already beginning to look like a significant investment for the club, with the winger delivering an impressive performance at the first opportunity to make his mark from the start.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after the match, Phili expressed his appreciation for the opportunity given to him by Motaung and promised to continue working hard for the club.
“Firstly, I want to thank the Almighty for this opportunity,” said Phili.
“I’m honestly out of words, but I’m very happy I was able to help the team. We really, really needed this win, and we worked for it.
“It’s a team effort, so I’m very happy that I was also part of the team. I want to keep delivering and doing this for the team.
The young winger also reflected on the difficult journey that preceded his move to one of the continent’s biggest clubs.
“Obviously, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but to be here, one of the biggest teams on the continent, it’s an honour and a privilege.
“I am just happy that the Chairman gave me the chance to represent this team, and all I can say is that I will keep fighting and doing my best for the team.
Phili’s display came at an important stage of the season for Kaizer Chiefs, who moved to the top of the standings after collecting the maximum six points from their opening two matches.
His arrival had generated considerable expectation after the club completed its pursuit of the former Stellenbosch FC sensation. The early signs are encouraging, with the winger now having contributed to a convincing home victory and earned individual recognition in his first official start.
Kaizer Chiefs’ next assignment will provide a considerably tougher test. They are due to host Mamelodi Sundowns in a highly anticipated blockbuster at FNB Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 15:00.
The meeting will give Phili and his new team-mates another opportunity to maintain their winning start, while also testing the strength of the side that currently sits at the summit of the standings.
