Ibrahima Konate produced an outstanding performance against Barcelona to emerge as one of Real Madrid’s key defensive figures and underline his progress under Jose Mourinho.
The France defender has moved beyond the criticism he received during last season at Liverpool, when questions were raised about his form and failure to renew his contract. According to Spanish newspaper AS, Konate looked a transformed player at Camp Nou, combining concentration and physical strength to become extremely difficult to beat.
Since 13 July, Mourinho has demanded greater “hunger” and a stronger desire to win from his players, both in matches and during training at the club’s Valdebebas base. Konate was among those who understood that message immediately.
Before Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Leipzig, he said of Mourinho: “He doesn’t need to talk constantly; he has an aura that many coaches don’t possess.”
Konate’s influence is reflected in his defensive statistics. He leads Real Madrid for blocked shots after stopping 12 attempts, four more than his nearest team-mate, Rudiger. His ability to intervene at crucial moments has been matched by his authority in physical duels, where he rarely allows opponents an easy advantage.
That aggression has also brought four yellow cards, making Konate the first Real Madrid player at risk of suspension in La Liga this season. He entered El Clasico under that threat but avoided a booking despite the intensity of the match, another indication that he is learning to control his challenges.
His performances have established him as the first-choice centre-back, with the experienced Rudiger currently serving as his principal replacement. Meanwhile, Huijsen is working to improve the physical side of his defending, a goal he made a priority last summer, and Konate has become the standard against which he can measure that progress.
Konate’s start at Real Madrid, however, was not flawless. On his league debut at Santiago Bernabeu against Real Sociedad at the end of August, he dealt poorly with Ocheing’s dribble and moved two metres away from his marker. That allowed Sucic to score the equaliser in a 1-1 draw, reviving memories of the criticism Konate had faced at Liverpool.
His form improved after an extended break, much of which he spent at Valdebebas while recovering from a minor physical problem. After appearing short of full sharpness against Real Sociedad, he gradually developed into one of Real Madrid’s most reliable defenders.
His best moment came in El Clasico during two successive attacks by Lamine Yamal. First, Konate used his strength and arms to move the Barcelona winger away from the ball without losing his balance or bringing him down. When Yamal tried again, the defender reacted rapidly, sliding to close the shooting angle and prevent the ball from getting through.
The performance offered Mourinho the defensive platform he wants as he attempts to restore the resilience needed for Real Madrid to finish matches without conceding. The club have kept only two clean sheets this season, against Malaga and Villarreal.
Real Madrid also conceded in 4-1 wins over Sevilla and Leipzig, with both opponents scoring after the home side had taken a 3-1 lead. Although those goals have not prevented victories, Mourinho regards clean sheets as essential to building a strong, competitive team. Konate’s continued form could therefore be central to providing the balance and stability he is seeking.
