Al Ain and Al-Ittihad renew their rivalry in the AFC Champions League Elite with the clubs level on victories across their six previous meetings.
Both sides have won twice and drawn twice, making their next encounter an opportunity for one to break the deadlock in the head-to-head record.
The statistics underline how evenly matched the teams have been. Al Ain have scored 10 goals in those matches, one more than Al-Ittihad’s nine, giving the Emirati club only a narrow advantage in the overall scoring record.
That balance makes it difficult to identify a clear favourite based solely on past results. Neither club has established sustained dominance, with earlier meetings producing contrasting outcomes and providing another layer of importance to the latest contest.
A rivalry shaped by two significant ties
One of the defining chapters in the clubs’ history came in the 2005 AFC Champions League final, when they met over two legs for the continental title.
The first match in the United Arab Emirates ended in a 1-1 draw. Al-Ittihad then secured a 4-2 victory at home in the second leg to win the trophy on aggregate.
That final remains a notable moment in Al-Ittihad’s Asian history. After Al Ain had held them at home, the Saudi club turned the tie in its favour in the decisive return fixture and claimed the championship.
The teams faced each other again in the 2014 edition, this time in the quarter-finals. Al Ain took control of the tie with a 2-0 victory in the first leg before completing another win in Saudi Arabia, beating Al-Ittihad 3-1 to advance 5-1 on aggregate.
Their 2014 campaign had already included two meetings in the group stage. Al-Ittihad won the first 2-1, while the other match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Those results highlighted the close nature of the contest, even though Al Ain went on to settle the knockout tie decisively and progress to the next round.
The latest meeting brings together the contrasting memories of the 2005 final, which belonged to Al-Ittihad, and the 2014 quarter-final, which Al Ain won. Both clubs now have the chance to add another significant result to a rivalry that has remained closely contested.
With the victories level at two apiece and two matches ending in draws, the next result could give either side the outright edge in the historical record.
The battle for goals is similarly tight. Al Ain lead by only one, meaning even a single decisive moment could alter the balance between the two clubs.
