Kelechi Iheanacho set for new Celtic deal after rejecting offers from Qatar and Turkey
Nigerian striker Kelechi Iheanacho is reportedly close to extending his stay with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic after negotiations between both parties reached an advanced stage.
The Super Eagles forward joined the Hoops as a free agent on a one-year contract, with the club holding an option to extend the agreement for another season.
However, following an impressive debut campaign in Glasgow, Celtic are now keen to secure the striker’s long-term future with a fresh two-year deal.
As per reports, talks between Iheanacho and the Scottish champions have progressed positively, with a return to Parkhead now considered the most likely outcome.
The 28-year-old forward’s performances during his first season at Celtic have reportedly convinced the club’s hierarchy that he remains an important part of their plans moving forward.
Despite arriving without a transfer fee, Iheanacho quickly adapted to life in Scotland, providing experience, creativity and attacking quality to Brendan Rodgers’ squad. His ability to operate across the frontline has also increased his value to the team as Celtic prepare for another challenging campaign.
The former Leicester City and Manchester City attacker had attracted interest from several clubs following his return to form, with teams from the Saudi Pro League, Major League Soccer (MLS), Qatar and Turkey all believed to have monitored his situation.
However, reports suggest the Nigerian international has prioritised staying in Glasgow and continuing his journey with the Scottish champions rather than pursuing a move elsewhere.
A new contract would represent a major boost for Celtic as they look to maintain their dominance in Scottish football and compete strongly in European competitions.
For Iheanacho, remaining at Celtic would provide stability at an important stage of his career as he continues to play a key role for the Nigerian national team. His experience at top European clubs and international level makes him a valuable asset both on and off the pitch.
Although an official announcement is yet to be made, all indications point towards the striker committing his future to Celtic with a new two-year agreement expected to be finalised soon.
The deal would end speculation over his future and allow Iheanacho to focus on helping the Hoops defend their league title while pursuing success on the domestic and European fronts.
