Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has emphasized the urgency of securing a spot at the next FIFA World Cup following his team’s successful qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking after Senegal’s 2-0 victory over Burundi, which sealed their impressive qualifying campaign, Koulibaly praised his teammates and outlined the Lions’ broader ambitions.
“After this draw at home, there were fears. But we showed that we are a great team by stringing together five wins.
We played great matches, and several players revealed themselves. It really makes us happy and gives us a lot of hope for the future,” said Koulibaly.
The defender highlighted the importance of maintaining their current momentum as the focus shifts to World Cup qualification.
“We will now continue to work, because the World Cup qualifiers are approaching. Our objective is to build a strong group, capable not only of winning trophies but also of qualifying for the World Cup.
We had two missions: first to secure qualification for the CAN, which is done, and then to see what we can accomplish during this AFCON.
We have a year to think about it, but the urgent thing remains qualifying for the World Cup. We will be ready in March to come back even stronger.”
Koulibaly also commented on the interim role of coach Pape Thiaw, underscoring the collective effort within the team’s coaching staff. “I don’t like to be talked about as interim.
We have a very qualified coach. I would also like to thank Aliou Cissé, because he helps us a lot.
He is the one who built this group, and Pape Thiaw continues this work by doing an excellent job. We are very happy for him, and we will always support him,” Koulibaly added.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, Koulibaly acknowledged the challenges but remained optimistic about Senegal’s chances. “We are committed to returning to the World Cup.
This will involve victories, but we know that it will not be easy. Africa always has surprises in store, no one is a favorite.
We have seen unexpected results in the last matches, but we will do everything to win and achieve our objectives.”
Finally, Koulibaly lauded the depth and resilience of Senegal’s squad, highlighting the team’s adaptability and strength.
“We have a very strong and very young group, with 26 potential starting players. The coach rotated the squad, and despite this, the quality remained the same.
This proves that we are capable of playing in different ways, with any player, and of remaining efficient in all matches. When we wear this jersey, it is to represent Senegal well.”
With a year to prepare for the AFCON and the World Cup qualifiers approaching, Koulibaly’s focus on building a formidable team reflects Senegal’s growing ambitions on the international stage.
