Kaizer Chiefs part ways with Gaston Sirino after two seasons spell
Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed the departure of experienced midfielder Gaston Sirino following the expiration of his contract with the club.
The Uruguay-born playmaker leaves Amakhosi after two seasons at Naturena, bringing an end to a spell that saw him contribute his experience and technical quality to the squad, although he struggled to consistently reproduce the outstanding form that made him one of the Premier Soccer League’s most influential players during his time at Mamelodi Sundowns.
Sirino joined Kaizer Chiefs with a strong reputation after several successful seasons at Sundowns, where he established himself as a key figure in the club’s attacking setup. His creativity, ability to unlock defences and close control made him one of the most admired foreign players in South African football.
However, injuries, competition for places and inconsistent performances meant he was unable to reach the same heights during his time with Amakhosi.
With his contract coming to an end last month, Chiefs decided against offering the 34-year-old a new deal as the club continues its squad restructuring ahead of the new season.
“Kaizer Chiefs bid farewell to Gaston Sirino. The Club would like to express sincere gratitude to Papi for his dedication and contribution over the past two seasons. The experienced Uruguayan midfielder played a key role in helping Amakhosi achieve success since he arrived at the Club.”
The club also praised his professionalism and commitment throughout his stay at Naturena.
“We thank Gaston for his commitment and passion, as well as all the memories he leaves behind at Naturena.”
Sirino’s departure marks the latest change in Chiefs’ efforts to refresh their squad and build a stronger team capable of challenging for major honours.
Despite not enjoying the same level of influence he had at Sundowns, the midfielder leaves with a wealth of experience and remains highly respected for his technical ability and understanding of the game.
During his time in South African football, Sirino won multiple domestic trophies with Sundowns and became known as one of the most creative players in the league. His move to Chiefs was viewed as a major signing at the time, with supporters hoping he could bring leadership and attacking inspiration to the club.
As a free agent, Sirino will now assess his options with interest likely to come from clubs looking for an experienced midfielder capable of providing quality and leadership.
For Kaizer Chiefs, his exit signals another step in their preparations for the upcoming campaign as the club looks to reshape the squad and return to competing at the highest level in South African football.
