Kaizer Chiefs get defensive boost as Bradley Cross, Paseka Mako and Reeve Frosler near comebacks

Kaizer Chiefs have suffered a major injury setback with promising new signing Langelihle Phili facing around eight weeks on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury in training.

The setback comes as a mixed injury update for the Glamour Boys, with Thabiso Monyane also ruled out for approximately four weeks despite recently establishing himself as an important member of Fernando Da Cruz’s starting XI.

Phili’s absence will be a particular concern for Chiefs, who had hoped to see the new signing make an impact as the season progresses. His injury means Da Cruz will have to manage his options carefully during the coming weeks.

Monyane’s injury could also force the French coach to reconsider the system he has used in recent matches. The defender has started Chiefs’ last two games in a 3-5-2 formation, making his absence another selection headache for Da Cruz.

Defensive reinforcements on the way

There is, however, some encouragement for Chiefs supporters, with four senior players edging closer to first-team returns.

Bradley Cross, Paseka Mako, Kabelo Nkgwesa and Reeve Frosler are all nearing comebacks, giving Da Cruz a potential boost at the back at a crucial stage of the campaign.

Frosler’s return could be particularly significant if Da Cruz decides to abandon the three-man defensive system that has been deployed in recent matches.

With Monyane unavailable, the Chiefs coach could revert to a back four and restore Frosler to a more familiar right-back position.

That would provide the Glamour Boys with an experienced option on the flank while allowing Da Cruz to adjust his tactical approach around the personnel available to him.

Chiefs unbeaten but work remains

Chiefs have made an encouraging, if unspectacular, beginning to life under Da Cruz in the Betway Premiership.

The Glamour Boys remain unbeaten after collecting eight points from a possible 12, keeping themselves among the early contenders while the new coach continues to establish his ideas.

Their latest outing ended in a 2-2 draw against Richards Bay, a match in which difficult weather conditions added another challenge for both teams.

Goalkeeper Brandon Petersen was particularly affected by the conditions as Chiefs surrendered points in the entertaining draw.

Chiefs will return to home action on Sunday, September 6, when they host Siwelele at 15:30.
