Mohamed Salah misses out as CAF announces 2026 African Player of the Year shortlist
Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah has been left out of the 10-man shortlist for the 2026 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award, in one of the biggest surprises following the Confederation of African Football’s announcement on Wednesday.
Salah, who has won the prestigious individual award twice, was notably absent from the list despite his established status among Africa’s leading footballers.
The shortlist features players from across the continent, with Morocco and Senegal leading the nominations with three representatives each.
Salah’s absence dominates CAF nominations
The Egyptian captain’s omission stands out among the major talking points from this year’s nominations.
Salah has previously been a regular contender for the award and has twice been crowned Africa’s best player. However, he will not be in contention for the 2026 prize.
His absence comes as Moroccan trio Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz and Ismail Al-Sibari headline their country’s representation on the shortlist.
Moroccan and Senegalese stars lead the race
Senegal also has three nominees: Ismaila Sarr, Bab Gaye and Sadio Mane.
The remaining candidates are Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo, Ivorian Amad Diallo, DR Congo’s Yoann Wissa and South African Teboho Mokoena.
Hakimi, who won the 2025 award, will be seeking to retain his crown after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League, French Ligue 1, French Cup and European Super Cup.
CAF Awards ceremony scheduled for December 7
The winner will be announced at the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony on December 7 in Lagos, Nigeria.
