Kaizer Chiefs are believed to be nearing an agreement to sign Elias Mokwana as the Soweto club seek an immediate solution to their scoring problems.
Sources indicate the South African international has been identified as a priority attacking target, with Chiefs moving to secure the 27-year-old ahead of other interested clubs. Negotiations with Mokwana’s representatives are continuing and a deal could be completed in the coming days.
Mokwana became a free agent after agreeing an early termination of his contract with Esperance de Tunis. His deal with the Tunisian club was originally due to run until June 2027.
Moroccan side Wydad AC had initially emerged as potential suitors after Mokwana’s departure from Esperance, but Chiefs have now stepped up their interest as they attempt to strengthen their squad before the second half of the season.
A proven PSL option
The proposed move would not involve a transfer fee, while Mokwana’s previous experience in the Premier Soccer League means he would already be familiar with the demands of domestic football.
Mokwana established himself during his time at Sekhukhune United before moving to Tunisia in July 2024. Chiefs believe his pace and attacking ability could address an area in which they have struggled during an inconsistent campaign.
The winger spent last season on loan with Saudi Pro League club Al Hazem, where he scored four goals. He was subsequently considered surplus to requirements by Esperance coach Laurentiu Reghecampf.
Chiefs are understood to be focusing on signings capable of making an immediate contribution without requiring significant financial investment. Mokwana’s availability on a free transfer, combined with his knowledge of the local game, makes him a strong fit for that strategy.
His representatives negotiated the early release from Esperance after the player’s spell at Al Hazem, allowing him to consider a new club before the expiry of his original contract.
The discussions with Chiefs have not yet been finalised, but the club are hopeful an agreement can be reached shortly. Mokwana’s arrival would give Amakhosi another attacking option as they look to improve their goalscoring form in the remainder of the campaign.
