Patrick Dorgu returns to Manchester United training ahead of Roma clash as injury boost offers hope
Patrick Dorgu has returned to Manchester United training after five weeks on the sidelines, providing a timely boost to the struggling Premier League side ahead of their UEFA Champions League meeting with Roma on Tuesday.
The Denmark international was involved in the club’s open training session as he stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during September’s UEFA Nations League encounter with Wales.
The 26-year-old has recovered ahead of schedule, giving Manchester United a potential reinforcement at a difficult stage of their campaign.
Dorgu’s return comes as manager Ruben Amorim deals with several injury concerns, with the wing-back having missed United’s last six matches during a frustrating spell without a victory.
His availability could be particularly important as United prepare for a crucial European fixture at Old Trafford, where defeat against Roma would see them equal their worst run of results in 75 years.
Dorgu returns after five-week injury lay-off
Dorgu’s recovery represents a significant development for United, who have struggled with their options at wing-back in recent weeks.
The former Lecce defender sustained the hamstring injury while representing Denmark in September and has not featured since making a brief appearance in the 1-1 draw against Fulham on September 20.
He played just six minutes in that encounter before the international break and has subsequently missed six games as United’s difficult run continued.
Luke Shaw has also been unavailable since the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham on October 10, leaving Amorim with fewer options in the wide defensive positions.
Dorgu’s return to group training therefore offers some encouragement as United attempt to turn their season around.
Amad trains as United assess injury situation
Meanwhile, Amad Diallo was also involved in training despite being forced off during United’s 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.
The Ivorian winger appeared lively during the session, offering another positive sign for Amorim as he assesses his squad ahead of Tuesday’s encounter.
Lisandro Martinez is also available for the Champions League fixture after serving his one-match suspension in the defeat to Chelsea.
The Argentine defender was sent off during United’s 2-0 loss to the London club, but his suspension does not extend to European competition.
He will, however, miss Sunday’s Premier League home fixture against Aston Villa.
Leny Yoro is another defensive option available to United after completing his European suspension, which he served during the defeat to Como.
Manchester United face unwanted 75-year record
United’s immediate concern remains ending their alarming run of results, with the visit of Roma presenting an important opportunity to restore confidence.
Their last victory came on September 10, when they defeated Sabah 4-1 in their European opener.
Since then, they have suffered a 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid before being thrashed 4-1 by Como, extending a difficult spell that has increased the pressure on the team.
A defeat against Roma would see United equal their joint-worst run of results in 75 years, making Tuesday’s encounter particularly significant.
However, Amorim will have to navigate the fixture without several important players.
Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Sesko and long-term absentee Manuel Ugarte were all absent from the open training session as they continue to deal with their respective injury problems.
With Dorgu returning and other defensive options becoming available, United will hope to have enough quality to arrest their decline and avoid another damaging result at Old Trafford.
