Demba Ba quits Le Havre after four months as Ligue 1 club faces leadership crisis

Former Newcastle United and Chelsea striker Demba Ba has left his position as sporting director at Le Havre AC, adding to the growing uncertainty surrounding the Ligue 1 club after a turbulent week that has already claimed the jobs of head coach Didier Digard and president Jean-Michel Roussier.

According to French newspaper L’Équipe, Ba has decided to leave the club just four months after taking up the role in June, becoming the latest high-profile departure from the Normandy outfit.

His exit comes amid a major shake-up at Le Havre, who are struggling at the foot of the Ligue 1 table following a disastrous start to the 2026/27 campaign.

The club now face the prospect of rebuilding their leadership structure midway through the season, with their sporting director, head coach and president all departing within a matter of days.

Demba Ba walks away after four months at Le Havre

Ba arrived at Le Havre in June after impressing in a similar capacity at Ligue 2 side USL Dunkerque, where he played an important role in the club’s sporting operations.

The former Senegal international was expected to bring his experience from professional football and previous administrative work to help strengthen Le Havre’s sporting project.

However, his spell at the club has proved short-lived, with L’Équipe reporting that he has opted to step down after just four months.

His departure further compounds the problems facing Le Havre, who are already dealing with the consequences of a difficult start to their league campaign.

The 40-year-old enjoyed a distinguished playing career, representing several European clubs, including Newcastle United and Chelsea, before moving into football administration.

Didier Digard sacking triggers fresh uncertainty

Ba’s departure follows Le Havre’s decision to dismiss head coach Didier Digard after their heavy 5-1 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain over the weekend.

The result extended the club’s disappointing run and left them with just two points from their opening nine league matches, leaving them bottom of the standings.

Digard had established himself as the second-longest-serving manager in Ligue 1 at the time of his dismissal, behind only Paris Saint-Germain’s Luis Enrique.

His departure marked another significant development in an increasingly unstable period for the club, with Le Havre struggling to find the consistency needed to remain competitive in the top flight.

The decision to part ways with the Frenchman also coincided with the resignation of club president Jean-Michel Roussier over the weekend.

Blue Crow face major rebuilding task

With Ba now following Digard and Roussier out of the club, Le Havre could find themselves without three key figures responsible for their sporting and administrative direction.

The situation leaves Blue Crow, the club’s ownership group, facing an urgent task to restore stability and appoint replacements capable of steering the team through the remainder of the campaign.

Beyond the immediate challenge of finding a new head coach, the club must also address the vacancies in its sporting department and presidential leadership.

Their position at the bottom of Ligue 1 makes the situation even more pressing, with results needed to prevent their difficult start from developing into a full-blown relegation battle.

Le Havre now face a crucial period in their season, with the ownership group under pressure to make important decisions that could shape the club’s immediate future.
