Jude Bellingham returns to St Andrew’s as Birmingham City welcome Barcelona

Jude Bellingham made an unexpected return to Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s Park on Friday evening, watching the club’s friendly against Barcelona from the stands.

The Real Madrid and England midfielder was back at the ground where his professional career began as Barcelona played their first match in England during preparations for the new season.

Bellingham attended the game while on holiday following his involvement with England at the 2026 World Cup. The fixture represented the official start of Barcelona’s pre-season programme under manager Hansi Flick, following a 4-1 closed-door victory over Europa.

The attention inside the stadium was naturally focused on Barcelona’s players, but many supporters were equally interested in the presence of Bellingham, who remains a hugely admired figure among Birmingham City fans despite leaving the club several years ago.

Some reports had suggested the 23-year-old would walk on to the pitch before kick-off to greet the home supporters. That did not happen, and there was no ceremonial role for him before the match either.

There had also been speculation that Bellingham might take the ceremonial kick-off. That possibility was ruled out, with the England international instead watching the match from the stands, where he appeared cheerful and energetic while receiving a warm welcome from the crowd.

Bellingham’s Birmingham City legacy

Bellingham’s connection with Birmingham City began when he joined the club’s academy at the age of seven. He progressed through the youth system at remarkable speed before making his first-team debut aged 16 years and 38 days.

That appearance made him the youngest player to represent Birmingham City, and he needed only one season to establish himself as an important member of the first-team squad.

Bellingham played 44 matches for the club, scoring four goals, and emerged as the standout player in a side competing in the Championship. His performances attracted attention from major European clubs, leading to a move to Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2020.

Although his time in the senior team at Birmingham City lasted only one season, his influence was significant. The club later took the unusual decision to retire the number 22 shirt in his honour.

Bellingham was only 17 when Birmingham City made that gesture, which is rarely seen in English football and has been reserved for only a small number of players in the sport’s history.

His return to St Andrew’s Park offered another reminder of the young midfielder’s importance to the club, even though he did not take part in the pre-match celebrations or step on to the pitch. Instead, he watched from the stands as Barcelona continued their preparations for the forthcoming campaign.
