The Jordanian football team, led by Moroccan coach Houcine Ammouta, triumphed over Saudi Arabia with a 2-1 victory in Riyadh. This match, held on Tuesday evening, marked the 6th and final day of the Asian qualifying stage for the 2026 World Cup (Group G).
The game commenced with Saudi Arabia taking an early lead as Ali Lajami found the net in the 16th minute.
However, the resilient Jordanians quickly responded. Striker Ali Olwan equalized in the 27th minute, setting the stage for a competitive clash.
Just before halftime, Nour Al-Rawabdeh delivered a crucial goal in the 45th+2 minute, securing the lead for Jordan.
With this impressive victory, Jordan ascended to the top of Group G, tying with Saudi Arabia at 13 points but edging ahead on goal difference.
Both teams have now secured their spots in the 3rd and final round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, as well as a place in the 2027 Asian Cup finals, set to take place in Saudi Arabia.
The Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup featured nine groups in the second round, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the decisive third round.
This final round, stretching until November 2025, will see 18 teams divided into three groups of six.
The top two teams from each group will qualify directly for the World Cup, while the best third-placed teams will compete in a play-off for the remaining two spots.
Jordan, having been finalists in the last Asian Cup in Qatar, now dreams of making history by qualifying for their first-ever World Cup.
The 2026 World Cup, to be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, will see eight Asian teams qualify directly, with a ninth team vying for a place through a FIFA play-off tournament.
