Jaylen Potgieter: South Africa youngster joins Adidas elite as rising FC Koln talent signs on alongside Jude Bellingham
South African teenager Jaylen Potgieter has been singled out by Adidas as one of the standout players in his age group worldwide, earning a sponsorship contract and an invitation to the brand’s headquarters in Germany while continuing his development at Bundesliga club FC Koln.
The 14-year-old, who plays in FC Koln’s youth ranks, has had a deal with Adidas in place since January 2024. Within the 2010-born age group, the sportswear company identifies its top 10 prospects globally and brings them to its campus in Herzogenaurach – an experience usually reserved for players on the brink of professional contracts.
Potgieter was among that select group, giving him a glimpse of the treatment afforded to global stars such as Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal when they sign with the German giant.
His father, former footballer Shaun Potgieter, travelled with Jaylen and the rest of the family to Germany last week as part of the activation of the sponsorship agreement, which is a standard product-based contract covering football boots and other performance incentives.
Family trip to Adidas HQ
The visit to Adidas’ vast campus proved as memorable for the parents as it was for the young midfielder.
“It was an amazing experience for the entire family. Not many professionals get an opportunity like this, and for us to experience it with Jaylen was phenomenal,” said Shaun.
“It’s moments like this that kids dream of, and for him to experience this at such a young age is even more than he could imagine. For us as the family, it makes those rainy and snowy days on the touchlines even more worthwhile.”
Set over roughly 185 hectares, the site includes multiple modern buildings and specialist performance facilities. The family spent a full day being shown around.
“I think my wife and I enjoyed it more than the kids because there is so much history on the campus,” Shaun explained. “Due to the size of the campus, it’s quicker to cycle from one building to the next. The bikes used on the campus are provided by Adidas and are also used for staff to get around.
“We did not do everything, but we got through most of the important stuff. One of the highlights was visiting the APEX center.”
Sports science and a ‘Wall of Fame’
At the APEX centre, an orthopaedic specialist carried out detailed measurements of Jaylen’s feet to ensure his boots are correctly fitted and to assess whether any customisation is required for his development and injury prevention.
Another standout moment came on the Adi Dassler football pitch, where Jaylen took part in a professional photoshoot and video recording session.
The day concluded with a visit to an exclusive onsite store, where Jaylen and his sister were able to select items as part of the sponsorship experience.
A Polaroid photograph of the young South African was then placed on an Adidas “Wall of Fame” alongside images of some of the brand’s most prominent ambassadors, including Springboks captain Siya Kolisi and Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham.
Guiding a minor through the business of football
With Jaylen still a minor, his parents remain central to all decisions over club and commercial agreements.
“As his parents, we only want the best for our son as well as for him to follow his dreams,” Shaun said. “It is very important for us to help him find the right balance and do what is best for him.
“Of course, it is helpful that I have experience in the football world and that I understand how these things work. I don’t know it all, so we lean on the expertise of an agency and the professionals for advice. However, at the end of the day, the family must agree and give the go-ahead.”
For young players, linking up with a global sportswear brand can bring both opportunity and pressure.
“It’s wild to imagine that such a young player can be given this opportunity. It can either distract you or motivate you to work harder. I believe the latter is true for Jaylen,” Shaun said of the deal, which provides boots and other Adidas products, plus performance-related bonuses.
Boots, idols and ambition
Jaylen’s collection of Adidas footwear has quickly grown since the partnership began.
“Too many for a kid that has only two feet,” his father joked, before revealing that his son’s preferred models are the Predator and F50.
When it comes to current Adidas-backed stars, there is one clear favourite. “Without a doubt, Jude Bellingham!” Shaun said.
He declined to disclose the financial value of the agreement. “[Laughs] Come on, Lungs, that’s a story for another day,” he said when pressed on numbers.
“Honestly, the rewards are huge, but my drive and passion are for young kids back home to dream and to see that it is possible; it is not far-fetched. Yes, the sacrifices are huge, but the rewards are much bigger and sweeter.”
For now, Jaylen’s focus remains on his progression through FC Koln’s academy system, with his Adidas deal offering both recognition of his potential and a powerful incentive to keep working towards a professional career.
