The latest FIFA rankings for the year 2024 have been released, unveiling notable shifts in position for several nations following a flurry of international matches in March, including friendly matches and qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Of particular interest are the movements of Ivory Coast, Morocco, and the Comoros. The Ivorian national team, ranked 39th previously, has edged up a spot to 38th following a commendable showing in March, highlighted by a 2-2 draw against Benin and a significant 2-1 victory over Uruguay, the 15th-ranked team globally.

Conversely, Morocco’s national team, the Atlas Lions, have slipped from 13th to 12th place in the rankings.

This decline follows a lukewarm performance during the March fixtures, culminating in a narrow 1-0 victory over Angola and a goalless draw against Mauritania.

Meanwhile, the Comoros Islands have achieved a historic milestone, advancing from 121st to 117th place in the rankings.

This remarkable progress stems from their impressive 4-0 triumph over Uganda, coupled with a resilient goalless draw against Angola, quarter-finalists in the previous edition of the AFCON.

This elevation marks the highest-ever ranking for the Comoros in their footballing history.

Elsewhere in the African football landscape, Nigeria has experienced a setback, slipping two places to 30th in the global rankings. Despite securing a 2-1 victory over Ghana earlier in March, the Super Eagles faltered against Mali, succumbing to a 2-0 defeat.

In contrast, Mali has surged three places to 44th following their noteworthy triumph over Nigeria, coupled with a preceding victory against Mauritania.

While shifts in global positions are evident, the top 20 rankings in Africa remain largely unchanged. The trio of Morocco, Senegal, and Nigeria continue to lead the African contingent, with Egypt and Ivory Coast closely trailing behind.

As nations continue to jostle for position in the FIFA rankings, the latest updates underscore the dynamic nature of international football, with teams striving to assert their prowess on the global stage while making history along the way.
