Bayer Leverkusen’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League were dashed after a 2-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich in the second leg of their last-16 tie, with the absence of key players, including Burkinabe defender Edmond Tapsoba and Nigerian winger Nathan Tella, proving costly.
Tapsoba and Tella Missing as Leverkusen Fall Short
With several injuries weakening their squad, Leverkusen struggled to match Bayern’s intensity, ultimately exiting the competition. Manager Xabi Alonso addressed the media after the match, explaining the reasons behind Tapsoba and Tella’s absence.
“Edmond Tapsoba is injured. He wasn’t ready to play today, nor was Nathan Tella, who has muscle problems. Unfortunately, there have been a lot of injuries this week,” Alonso stated.
Despite not being fit to play, both players were present on the substitutes’ bench, a decision Alonso clarified:
“There was room on the bench, so they could be there.”
Doubt Over Bundesliga Return
Looking ahead to Leverkusen’s upcoming Bundesliga clash against Stuttgart, Alonso remained cautious about the availability of Tapsoba and Tella.
“It’s too early to say if they’ll be available on Sunday. The last decision was that they weren’t ready for the Bayern game.
Yesterday, they participated in 50% of training, but this morning they told me they didn’t feel fit. We’ll see by Sunday,” the Spanish coach explained.
With Leverkusen aiming to maintain their momentum in the Bundesliga, the potential absence of Tapsoba, a defensive mainstay, could pose a significant challenge.
Leverkusen’s Focus Shifts to Domestic Campaign
Following their Champions League exit, Leverkusen must quickly refocus on their domestic ambitions. The coming days will determine whether Tapsoba and Tella can recover in time to play a role in the crucial fixture against Stuttgart.
For Alonso’s side, regaining full strength will be essential as they look to put their European disappointment behind them and push forward in the Bundesliga.
