Inacio Miguel says Kaizer Chiefs responded to MTN8 disappointment with ‘revenge’ win
Kaizer Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel says the club were determined to respond after their MTN8 disappointment when they defeated Sekhukhune United 2-0 in the Betway Premiership on Wednesday.
The victory at FNB Stadium on 12 August 2026 came after Kaizer Chiefs were eliminated by Lamontville Golden Arrows in the quarter-finals of the MTN8. Miguel said the pressure on the team had been considerable, but insisted the players understood that a strong reaction was required.
The Angola international described the win over Sekhukhune United as a form of redemption for the Soweto club, who had faced intense scrutiny following their cup exit.
“It was not an easy game, especially coming from a defeat in the MTN8,” Miguel told journalists at the club’s media press conference on Thursday.
“But I think we prepared well for the game. I think everyone knows that after a defeat playing for such a big club like Kaizer Chiefs, there is no other answer than going forward and looking for revenge, no matter which team it is.
“So I think we dealt well with that; the team was fully focused on that. We played a nice game.
“Obviously I think there are a lot of things we could have done better, but as I always say, it’s a process.”
The three points provided an immediate response to Kaizer Chiefs’ unexpected MTN8 quarter-final elimination and gave the club a perfect start to the league campaign.
The Naturena-based side have won both of their opening Betway Premiership matches and now sit at the top of the early standings. Their latest success also offered relief after the disappointment of losing to Lamontville Golden Arrows in the cup competition.
Miguel acknowledged that the performance against Sekhukhune United was not without flaws, but said the team’s focus and preparation had allowed them to deal with the demands of the occasion.
Kaizer Chiefs will now attempt to build on the result when they face a major test against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns. The fixture will give the early league leaders an opportunity to maintain their perfect record while measuring their progress against one of the competition’s strongest sides.
For Miguel, the win represented more than a routine league success. It was the response Kaizer Chiefs needed after a defeat that had placed the squad under pressure, with the players showing their intention to move forward rather than allow the MTN8 setback to define their season.
