I will retire from coaching after 2026 World Cup – South Africa coach Hugo Broos
South Africa coach Hugo Broos says he will call it a quit after the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
The 73-year-old Belgian tactician started his coaching career in 1988 with RWD Molenbeek and has since had an illustrious career, leading top clubs including Trabzonspor, Club Brugge, Genk, Anderlecht and others.
At the international level, Broos previously managed the Cameroon national team before taking over the South African job.
The experienced tactician left an indelible mark at Cameroon after just a year, reaching the finals of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations with the Indomitable Lions.
In the last AFCON tournament held in Ivory Coast, Broos led the Bafana Bafana to a third place finish after defeating DR Congo on penalties.
Broos, who is eyeing an appearance at the World Cup with South Africa says he will call it a quit after the tournament.
His intention is to guide the team to the World Cup, see them through the tournament, and then depart.
“The decision has been made. After the World Cup, I’ll resign. My contract will be up, and I’ll end my coaching career. I’ve been coaching for almost 40 years, I’m 73. At some point, you have to stop. I don’t want to die on the bench,” Broos stated.
South Africa are in pole position to secure qualification to the biggest soccer mundial tournament to be staged in the USA.
Hugo Broos took charge of Bafana Bafana in May 2021 and has since overseen the team in 42 matches.
