Morocco head coach, Walid Regragui, has sparked widespread controversy with his fiery statements following the friendly victory over Benin.
The Atlas Lions secured a 1-0 win against Benin in their second friendly game after beating Tanzania in their first game by the same margin.
However, despite going 12 matches without a defeat, Regragui has been criticised by the fans.
Speaking to Al-Riyadhiya TV after the win on Monday, the gaffer hinted at the possibility of stepping down from his position if the Moroccan public continues to be dissatisfied with his performance.
“If I no longer impress some people, and they see me as a bald man who doesn’t suit their tastes, I’ve said it and I’ll say it again: I’ll keep my promise to leave, step down, and hand over the reins to someone else. And I’ll be his first supporter if he wins the Africa Cup of Nations with us,” Regragui said.
“I’m thinking of going to Türkiye for a hair transplant and changing my appearance. Maybe I’ll transform into a different person who will impress critics and angry people.”
Regragui addressed the Moroccan public, urging them to be realistic in their expectations regarding Morocco’s hosting of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
“Anyone who thinks that hosting the Africa Cup of Nations means winning it is mistaken. Egypt, the experts, hosted the tournament but did not win it. Germany hosted the Nations League semi-finals and lost to Portugal and France. Brazil hosted the World Cup and lost 7-1 to Germany. We have to be realistic.”
Morocco now turn their attention to their World Cup qualifiers in September with games against Niger and Zambia.
