Guinea’s 1-0 victory over Kenya has tightened the Group D standings, but South Africa remain firmly in control of their route to the Africa Cup of Nations 2027.
Serhou Guirassy scored the only goal in the 32nd minute at the Stade du 28 Septembre in Conakry, giving Paulo Duarte’s Guinea their first points of the qualifying campaign. The result moved Guinea into second place, while Kenya’s Harambee Stars remain on one point after two matches.
The outcome has not altered South Africa’s position at the top of the section. Pitso Mosimane’s side have won both of their games and lead the group with six points and a +6 goal difference.
However, Group D has an unusual qualification arrangement because Kenya are guaranteed a place at AFCON 2027 as co-hosts alongside Uganda and Tanzania. Their eventual position in the group will therefore not determine whether they take part in the tournament.
If Kenya finish among the top two teams, the qualification place allocated through the group will instead pass to the highest-ranked eligible side below them. That means the decisive contest for Group D’s single qualifying place is effectively between South Africa and Guinea.
South Africa already hold a significant advantage in that race. Their opening 2-1 win against Guinea gave them three points over their main rivals, while the 5-0 victory against Eritrea strengthened their goal difference and provided an early tie-breaker advantage.
Bafana Bafana’s next fixture will be outside the qualifying campaign. They travel to Cairo to play Egypt in an international friendly at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, 4 October 2026.
Their return to competitive action will come during the 9–17 November FIFA window, when Mosimane’s team face Kenya twice in a home-and-away Group D double-header. The venues for those matches have yet to be confirmed.
South Africa could take a major step towards qualification in those two games. Four points from the November fixtures would take Bafana Bafana to 10 points and leave them on the brink of officially securing their place at the 2027 finals.
