Egypt’s national coach, Helmi Tolan, sparked controversy ahead of the Arab Cup in Qatar, expressing frustration over scheduling conflicts between the national team and club matches.

Tolan criticized the Club Association, saying, “We play for Egypt, and there should be respect for the national team. I presented our training plan, but the Association ignored it and scheduled matches that overlap with our preparations.”

The crisis intensified with the Pyramids club, which requested postponement of its matches to allow players to join the national squad. Tolan warned, “I am not young in age or coaching. I will not accept being insulted at the end of my career. If the situation remains, I will withdraw as coach—my optimism for this generation deserves more.”

He lamented difficulties in securing proper training facilities, comparing Egypt’s situation unfavorably with Morocco: “We struggle to find pitches. In Morocco, teams have their own stadiums and hotels, while we face obstacles merely to train.”

Tolan’s complaints echo public sympathy for the team’s struggles. He concluded, “If any coach accepts building a squad with half its players changed, let him lead, not me.”
