Harvey Barnes signs long-term Newcastle United contract extension

Harvey Barnes has committed his future to Newcastle United by signing a new long-term contract, with the winger rewarded after his most prolific season for the club and a return to the England squad.

The 28-year-old, who joined Newcastle from Leicester City in the summer of 2023, had two years remaining on his previous deal but has now agreed extended terms to stay at St James’ Park for the coming seasons.

Barnes said he was delighted to finalise the agreement ahead of the new campaign.

“I feel very happy to sign this new contract before the start of the season. It has been a fantastic journey so far and I’m very happy to continue here,” he said.

He added: “When I joined the club I quickly realised how special it was, but after three years I know that even more. I love everything here – the city, the stadium, the fans – and I’m extremely happy to extend my stay.”

Barnes targets greater impact

Barnes believes both he and the team can still progress, stressing he wants to play a decisive role in Newcastle’s next steps.

“I’ve enjoyed some really special successful moments with the team over the past few years, but we all want more, and I want to be an influential player who helps the club keep moving forward,” he said.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe described the extension as a deserved recognition of Barnes’ importance since arriving on Tyneside.

“Harvey’s new contract is fully deserved and reflects the work he has put in and the quality he has shown over the past three years,” Howe said.

“Harvey is a player who is used to making the difference in decisive moments. He has great composure in front of goal, whether it is one-on-one situations or long-range shots, and he is always a threat from wide areas.”

Howe concluded: “Despite the fact he has considerable experience at the highest level, we believe he is still capable of offering even more.”

Best scoring season and England recall

Last season was the most productive of Barnes’ career in front of goal, as he scored 16 times in 57 appearances in all competitions.

That form earned him a recall to the England national team in March, when he featured in a friendly against Uruguay at Wembley. It was his first international appearance for almost six years.

Since swapping Leicester City for Newcastle, Barnes has scored 30 goals in 120 matches, averaging a goal every four games.

Record late winner in Premier League history

Earlier this year, Barnes also etched his name into Premier League history by scoring the latest winning goal the competition has seen.

He struck a decisive effort in the 102nd minute against Leeds United, securing all three points for Newcastle at St James’ Park and delivering what was described as the latest match-winning goal ever recorded in the Premier League.

Barnes’ new deal underlines Newcastle’s intention to keep a core of experienced players in place as they look to build on recent progress under Howe in the seasons ahead.
