Hansi Flick’s Barcelona move closer to elite La Liga milestone

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has made an emphatic start to his attempt to join the club’s most successful coaches, opening their La Liga title defence with a 5-0 victory over Elche.

The German is aiming to lead Barcelona to a third consecutive league title, a feat achieved by only two managers in the club’s history: Johan Cruyff and Pep Guardiola.

Flick began his La Liga career with a 2-1 win against Valencia in his first season in charge. He then opened his second campaign with a 3-0 victory over Mallorca before maintaining that winning pattern with a commanding five-goal success against Elche at the start of the current season.

The result means Flick has taken the first step towards matching Guardiola’s achievement. Guardiola guided Barcelona to three successive La Liga titles between 2009 and 2011, while Cruyff remains the club’s record-holder after leading the side to four consecutive championships from 1991 to 1994.

Flick is now one full season away from equalling Guardiola’s best run. To match Cruyff’s record, however, he would have to retain the La Liga title for a fourth successive campaign.

The victory over Elche underlined Barcelona’s readiness to continue their domestic dominance. They produced a powerful attacking display, giving Flick an ideal beginning to his latest title defence and strengthening his hopes of moving into the club’s list of most successful managers.

Despite the emphatic opening, Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo reported that Flick’s challenge will not be straightforward. Barcelona are expected to face strong competition from Real Madrid, who have strengthened their squad with major summer signings.

The return of Jose Mourinho to the dugout is another factor expected to complicate Barcelona’s campaign, with the Portuguese manager seeking to reclaim the league title.

Flick’s immediate target is therefore clear: preserve Barcelona’s crown for a third successive season and emulate Guardiola’s three-title sequence. A further triumph after that would put him level with Cruyff’s historic four-year run, a record that has stood for more than three decades.

The 5-0 win against Elche does not guarantee that Barcelona will complete either achievement, but it provides the kind of statement victory required at the beginning of a title defence. Having already collected the first three points of the new campaign in emphatic fashion, Flick’s pursuit of a place alongside Cruyff and Guardiola is now under way.
