CAF 1st Vice President Fouzi Lekjaa appointed Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance
Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) and a senior figure in African and world football, has been appointed Morocco’s Minister of Economy, Finance and Public Performance.
The appointment marks a significant development in Lekjaa’s career, expanding his responsibilities beyond football administration into one of the country’s most important government portfolios.
Lekjaa has established himself as an influential figure in the administration of the game, serving as the head of the FRMF, first vice-president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a member of the FIFA Council.
His new ministerial role further strengthens his position at the intersection of sport, politics and economic policy in Morocco.
As FRMF president, Lekjaa has been a prominent figure in Moroccan football’s development and the country’s growing influence within African and international football administration.
His involvement in CAF and FIFA has also placed him among the key decision-makers in the governance of the sport, as Morocco continues to strengthen its position on the continental and global stages.
The appointment to the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Public Performance represents a major addition to his public responsibilities, placing him in a position to contribute to the formulation and implementation of Morocco’s economic and financial policies.
Lekjaa’s dual presence in government and football administration also highlights the close relationship between sport and public policy in Morocco, where football has become an important component of the country’s international profile.
His continued leadership at the FRMF, alongside his responsibilities within CAF and FIFA, will remain a significant aspect of his influence in the sport.
The appointment is another milestone in the career of a figure whose responsibilities now span football governance, public administration and economic affairs.
Born in Berkane in 1970, Lekjaa studied agricultural engineering at the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Rabat, graduating in 1994.
He later pursued administrative studies at Morocco’s National School of Administration before beginning a career in public finance.
He joined the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 1997 as a financial inspector. He subsequently held several positions within the ministry before becoming director of the state budget in 2011, a position he held until 2021.
In October 2021, King Mohammed VI appointed Lekjaa as minister delegate in charge of the budget under the government led by Aziz Akhannouch.
His new appointment puts him at the head of a key ministry responsible for the country’s public finances, including budget preparation, government spending, and the allocation of public resources.
