Golden Boy 2026: Pau Cubarsi leads Barcelona’s latest youth charge

Pau Cubarsi has emerged as the leading contender for the 2026 Golden Boy award, moving ahead of Barcelona team-mate Lamine Yamal in the latest standings.

The 19-year-old defender has attracted widespread attention after impressing for both Barcelona and Spain. He is also ranked among the top 10 players in the Ballon d’Or standings, underlining his growing status at senior level.

According to Sport’s latest update, published on Thursday, Cubarsi is 700 points clear of Yamal in the race to be named the best young player in the world. Yamal won the award in 2024.

Yan Diomande, one of Real Madrid’s latest summer signings, currently occupies third place on the podium. The player moved to the Spanish capital for an initial fee of 125m euros, with a further 15m euros available in potential add-ons.

Warren Zaire-Emery of Paris Saint-Germain is fourth, 6,000 points behind Barcelona defender Cubarsi.

Morocco international Ayoub Bouaddi is fifth in the ranking. Bouaddi has been linked with a possible move to Manchester City, where he could be viewed as a potential replacement for Rodri.

Barcelona have three players among the top 100 nominees. Alongside Cubarsi and Yamal, Marc Bernal is ranked 20th.

Real Madrid also have three representatives in the list. In addition to Diomande, Endrick is eighth, while Thiago Pitarch is 40th.

Porto are the best-represented club in the standings, with five players included among the contenders.

The Premier League has the strongest overall presence of any competition, with 26 players in the top 100. The Bundesliga follows with 18 players, Ligue 1 has 14, Serie A has nine and La Liga is fifth with eight.

The 2026 Golden Boy award is open to players born from 2006 onwards who compete in one of Europe’s top 25 leagues.

The ceremony is scheduled to take place in London on 26 October, with Cubarsi currently considered the leading candidate to win an award that has been dominated by Barcelona players over the past five years.

Pedri won the prize in 2021, followed by Gavi in 2022 and Yamal in 2024. No award was listed for 2023 in the source standings, while Cubarsi’s current position gives Barcelona another strong opportunity to extend their recent influence on the honour.

At present, the Barcelona defender’s lead over Yamal is the clearest indication of how the young centre-back has progressed during a breakthrough period for club and country. His position at the top of the ranking also places him ahead of several high-profile prospects from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City-linked Bouaddi.
