Ghanaian forward Mohammed Fuseini has shared his excitement following his first goal in European competition, helping Royale Union Saint-Gilloise secure a 1-0 victory over FC Twente in the Europa League.
This win marked a crucial turning point for Saint-Gilloise, marking their first victory in the group stage and boosting their hopes of advancing to the next round.
Heading into matchday five, Saint-Gilloise had struggled in the Europa League with two draws and two losses, compounded by the absence of Fuseini. The attacker had missed the first two games after receiving a red card in the qualifying rounds.
The team’s away win against FC Twente was a much-needed boost.
“I was really excited and happy with the team to get our first win in the Europa League. This was an important game for us and you could see at the end the excitement on everyone’s faces,” Fuseini revealed in an exclusive interview with Flashscore.
Before this match, Fuseini had played six Europa League matches for both Sturm Graz and Saint-Gilloise without scoring. His goal against Twente marked a breakthrough.
“I felt so emotional when I saw the ball going into the net. At the end, I was also a bit disappointed because I felt I could have scored more goals.”
This victory has not only lifted the team’s spirits but also positioned Saint-Gilloise to compete more confidently for a spot in the playoffs. Fuseini expressed optimism for their future matches: “Yes, I think this win is going to boost our confidence going into every game with the mindset of winning and we definitely think there is a chance for us to qualify for the playoffs.”
Reflecting on his season so far, Fuseini is optimistic about his development. The former Sturm Graz player, who joined Saint-Gilloise for around two million euros last summer, is currently the club’s top scorer with five goals in all competitions.
“For me personally I think it is really going well because I feel like there is more room for improvement and the season is still long. I want to get double figures at the end of the season,” he stated confidently.
Fuseini’s ambition aligns with Saint-Gilloise’s broader goals in the Europa League. Following their recent triumph over Twente, he believes the team has the quality to challenge any opponent in the group stage.
“From the performance of yesterday, I think we have what it takes to beat any of the teams we have to face in the league phase of the Europa League.”
Saint-Gilloise will finish the group stage with two home fixtures against Nice and Braga before travelling to face Rangers on the final matchday.
