Ghana coach Carlos Queiroz steps down

Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has officially announced his departure as head coach of Ghana following the Black Stars’ exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Ghana’s campaign came to an end in the Round of 32 after a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia, bringing the team’s impressive run at the tournament to a heartbreaking conclusion.

Queiroz confirmed his decision in an emotional message shared on his Instagram account on Sunday evening, reflecting on the team’s journey and expressing pride in the progress made during his tenure.

“Football, like life, has taught us an eternal lesson: either you win, or you learn,” Queiroz wrote.

The experienced Portuguese tactician, who previously managed the Egyptian national team, admitted that although the tournament ended in disappointment, he leaves with a sense of pride over what the team achieved.

“I leave this journey feeling proud of what we have achieved, but also with that healthy sense of dissatisfaction that characterizes those who always strive for more,” he stated.

“Reaching a higher level should not be the end of the road, but the beginning of greater ambitions.”

Queiroz also stressed that Ghana’s future success must be built beyond performances on the pitch, calling for better structures and support systems to help the country maximize its football potential.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built on the pitch alone. The success of the Black Stars must begin off the pitch, by providing the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop the exceptional footballing talent in Ghana.”

The former Real Madrid and Portugal assistant coach also took time to thank officials of the Ghana Football Association for the opportunity to lead one of Africa’s most iconic national teams.

“To the president of the federation and the board members, thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to serve the Ghanaian national team. It has been a great honor and privilege to serve this country and the Black Stars.”

He also paid tribute to his players and members of the technical team for their commitment and dedication throughout the World Cup campaign.

“To my players and members of the technical and administrative staff, I extend my sincere gratitude for your courage, commitment and unwavering dedication to the team,” he added.

Despite the painful elimination, Queiroz believes Ghana restored its reputation on the global stage and competed with pride during the tournament.

“To the fans, we may not be able to claim that we have achieved complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we have defended the colors of Ghana with honor, and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on the biggest stages of football”

“Thank you, Ghana, the journey begins now.” he concluded.
