Fulham secure verbal agreement with Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu as Palace monitor deal

Fulham have reached a verbal agreement with Trabzonspor defender Chibuike Nwaiwu as they move to strengthen their back line, with Crystal Palace tracking developments but prioritising an alternative target.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international has attracted firm interest from the Premier League after a standout campaign in Turkey, where Trabzonspor won the Turkish Cup and impressed in the Super Lig. His consistent performances at the heart of their defence have drawn the attention of several European scouts.

According to reports from journalist Florian Plettenberg, Fulham have moved quickest, securing Nwaiwu’s verbal commitment as they open talks with Trabzonspor over a transfer. The London club’s hierarchy have already begun discussions with the Turkish side in an attempt to convert that initial agreement into a completed deal.

Crystal Palace keep Nwaiwu on shortlist

Crystal Palace are also following Nwaiwu’s situation closely as they assess defensive options ahead of a potential reshaping of their back four.

The club are preparing for the anticipated departure of Maxence Lacroix to Chelsea, and have identified Nwaiwu as one of the players who could help fill the gap if the Frenchman completes his move.

However, while Palace are interested in Nwaiwu’s profile and continue to monitor his situation, he is not currently their main focus in this transfer window.

Matsima deal takes priority for Palace

Palace’s primary defensive target at this stage is Chrislain Matsima, with the club now in concrete negotiations with FC Augsburg over a deal for the centre-back.

Talks with Augsburg are described as advanced, with Palace devoting most of their efforts to trying to find an agreement for Matsima before turning fully to any alternative options.

As a result, Nwaiwu remains a secondary but active option for the Eagles. Should negotiations for Matsima stall or collapse, Palace are expected to consider stepping up their interest in the Trabzonspor defender.

Trabzonspor’s successful season draws interest

Trabzonspor’s strong campaign has ensured several of their key players are now under increased scrutiny from clubs across Europe, and Nwaiwu is among those to have benefitted most from that exposure.

Their Turkish Cup triumph, combined with a high finish in the Super Lig, has put the spotlight on the squad and underlined the progress of some of their younger talents.

Nwaiwu’s performances throughout the season, both domestically and in high-pressure cup fixtures, have helped establish him as one of the most watched defenders in the Turkish top flight, contributing directly to Fulham’s push and Palace’s interest.

For now, Fulham are in the strongest position thanks to the verbal agreement already in place with the Super Eagle, but the outcome will ultimately depend on negotiations with Trabzonspor and on whether Crystal Palace’s bid to sign Matsima from FC Augsburg forces them to take a more aggressive stance in the race for Nwaiwu.
